In This Fateful Hour...

This past Thursday a truly amazing woman and author passed away. Sadly, this story was buried under the latest celeb gossip, Pavorotti's deatha and other things so that I didn't hear about it until a customer mentioned it to me today.

Madeleine L'Engle was my favorite author when I was younger. I must have read A Swiftly Tilting Planet at least a dozen times. At one point I had even memorized the poem that the the chapters made and would list it as my favorite poem. "A Ring of Endless Light" was another favorite, which I also read countless times. Her books were more than your typical fantasy fiction. Unlike some authors, she did not underestimate the intelligence of your average teenager. Her novels were intelligent and complex, and I loved them.

For more on the life of Madeleine L'Engle, here is a link to the New York Times article posted yesterday: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/08/books/07cnd-lengle.html?ex=1204776000&en=b8c04cc938dda37f&ei=5087&excamp=GGGNmadeleineengle
